Gabbeh Basi Rug

Gabbeh rugs are handwoven by Gashgai and Lori nomads in the Fars Province surrounding Shiraz. Traditionally used for sleeping due to their higher, insulating pile, Gabbehs are made from uneven, handspun wool rich in lanolin, giving them a distinctive, grainy texture. Many pieces feature natural shades of cream, brown, and grey, while reds, yellows, greens, and blues are achieved using plant-based dyes. Most Gabbehs are minimalist in design; when motifs are present, they reflect stylised scenes from nomadic life—goats, camels, dogs, plants, and human figures are common themes.
